When I first found out we were having a baby girl, I immediately started looking on Pinterest and Etsy for anything and everything princess. Scrolling through the flood of princess-inspired tu-tus, I decided to make my own for our little princess. Before our baby girl was born she owned her very own handmade fairy princess tu-tu. I whipped this up with some sparkly, pink and purple colored tulle fabric and crocheted headband ribbon.
Here’s how to make your own princess tu-tu in just a few minutes!
What you need:
- Multiple colors of tulle (I used glittery pink and purple)
- Crocheted headband ribbon
Step 1 – Measure your little one from waist to about mid calf. Since my daughter wasn’t born yet, I used 12 inches as my estimate, which worked well for a 1 year-old toddler.
Step 2 – Doubling the length you measured, cut 3-4 inch wide strips of the tulle fabric. So, if you measured 12 inches from waist to mid calf, you should cut strips of tulle that are 24 inches long.
Step 3 – Wrap the crocheted headband ribbon around your little one’s waist. Add an inch or two and cut.
Step 4 – Starting an inch in from the end of the ribbon, slip one strip of tulle through the bottom row of the crocheted ribbon. Pull the tulle through the hole evenly and tie a knot.
Step 5 – Using a different colored strip of tulle, thread the fabric through the hole and tie in a knot. Continue alternating colors and stop about an inch before the end of the ribbon.
Step 6 – Once the entire bottom row of crocheted headband ribbon is filled with strip of tulle, with the exception of an inch on each end, tie the two ends of crocheted ribbon together forming a circle. To be certain the tu-tu will fit, wrap the ribbon around your little one’s waist and tie together so it fits tightly.
One year later, we celebrated her first birthday with a princess themed party (complete with a Disney princess bounce house) where she wore the princess tu-tu I made her.
These tu-tus are perfect for DIY Halloween costumes, first birthday parties or any excuse to dress up like a fairy princess! I’d love to know what occasion you made your princess tu-tu for! Share your experience in the comments.
