I wish I could, but I cannot claim this idea as my own…my husband came up with this cute idea to make a mobile out of paper towel and toilet paper rolls. We started saving our rolls weeks ago. Of course, running a bed and breakfast we have an advantage as we go through SO many rolls of toilet paper. It’s incredible really, how much toilet paper we go through in a week.
We love finding new ways to recycle the paper rolls and reuse them in our crafts. This idea is really simple, you just take the rolls and paint them any way you’d like. Make sure you save three large paper towel rolls to make the base. Save the toilet paper rolls for the hanging materials.
Next, follow these few easy steps for creating your own Rainbow Paper Towel Mobile:
What you need:
- 3 paper towel rolls (plus more if you’d like)
- Lots of toilet paper rolls
- Acrylic paint + brushes
- Hole puncher
- Clear string/fishing line
- Drop cloth
Step 1 – Remove all of the paper from the paper towel and toilet paper rolls.
Step 2 – Squeeze a layer of paint onto the plate. Lightly roll the paper towel and toilet paper rolls onto the plate to cover the surface of the roll with paint. Use a brush to spread and cover the roll entirely with paint.
Step 3 – Stand the rolls upright to dry thoroughly.
Step 4 – Once the paint has fully dried, create the mobile base by threading a long piece of clear string through the three paper towel rolls. Shape the rolls into a triangle shape and tie a knot in the string tightly.
Step 5 – Take the smaller toilet paper rolls and cut into spirals by cutting about ¾” around the entire roll. This step should be performed by an adult or older child as it can be difficult to cut the toilet paper roll.
Step 6 – At the top of the toilet paper spirals, punch a hole to hang the string from.
Step 7 – Tie a piece of string to the toilet paper roll and hang from the triangle, paper towel base.
Step 8 – Repeat steps 5 through 8 until the mobile is as full as you’d like.
Step 9 – Create the hanger for the mobile by tying a long piece of string around each paper towel piece on the base. Thread the three strings through a hole in the button (one hole will be left open).
Step 10 – Gather the three strings together in one hand and be sure the mobile is balanced by sliding the button lower on the strings. You may need to pull one piece of string tighter or slide the strings along the toilet paper roll sides to adjust and make sure the mobile base is level. Tie the three strings into a knot just above the button to secure its place.
Step 11 – Loop the string at the very top to create a hook and tie into a tight knot.
The toughest part is definitely making sure the mobile is level and evenly balanced, so you may need to help your child in hanging the mobile.
Be sure to hang somewhere out of reach, especially if you have toddlers!
Also keep in mind, after a day or two, the toilet paper roll spirals will loosen and the mobile will become taller/longer. So hang accordingly!
