Doing arts and crafts with a toddler is always an interesting experience. Sometimes we start an arts and craft session with a project planned out. Sometimes we actually accomplish said project.
Many times though, we start out making one thing and once finished we’ve created something entirely different. The beauty of raising creative kids is that they are always using their imagination. It may be difficult as the parent to let go and just let the child guide the project. I’ve learned the most exciting projects for my daughter have been the activities that she’s been free to create what she’s feeling in the moment. Open ended crafting is usually much more successful than sticking to a strict set of instructions.
This cute little caterpillar was the result of one of Cicily’s original ideas. We intended to make an apple shaped felt purse, but our creation quickly became the home of a pipe cleaner caterpillar.
The little bead caterpillar and felt apple is so easy to make and is such a cute spring themed craft idea. Follow along below to make your own.
What you need:
- Red, green, brown, blue felt
- Googly eyes
- Pipe cleaners
- Small wooden beads
- Scissors (use small rounded kids’ scissors if your toddler plans to do the cutting)
Step 1 –
Draw the apple shape on the red felt. Cut the felt to create the apple “home” for the caterpillar.
Step 2 –
Draw and cut out two leaves and one stem using the green and brown felt.
Step 3 –
Glue the felt leaves and stem to the red apple shape.
Step 4 –
Cut a small circle out of the blue felt for the caterpillar’s head. Glue to the apple.
Step 5 –
String the pipe cleaner with wooden beads until it is full covered. At the end, slightly bend the pipe cleaner to prevent the beads from slipping off.
Step 6 –
Bend the pipe cleaner caterpillar into a wavy shape and glue to the caterpillar head.
Step 7 –
Secure two google eyes to the caterpillar head. Attach two curly pipe cleaner antennas to the caterpillar head. Draw on a smile to finish.
I think he turned out super cute. This would also make a cute homemade gift for your child’s teacher. Simply write out a special note and glue to the back of the apple to create an adorable handmade card.
