Collecting records has become quite a thing at my house. We’re constantly playing new and old albums. In fact, my daughter actually calls DVDs records because she learned about vinyls first.
While collecting hundreds of vinyl treasures, we’ve also gotten our hands on many piles of records we’ll just never actually listen to. Rather than let them go to waste, we’ve decided to use them in our arts and crafts projects for the next few months.
First on our list, we’ve turned an old album into a take-along magnetic chalkboard.
Normal chalkboards are easy to find, but the advantage of the vinyl chalkboard is that it’s lightweight and perfect for playing with in the car or at a restaurant. Just store in the car with a pack of chalk crayons and you have instant entertainment for your little one.
Not all chalk crayons are made equal, though. We’ve found that these “Chalk-o-Rama Dustless Chalk Crayons” from OOLY, are by far the best! They are super easy to clean off of multiple surfaces, they are mess free because they don’t leave a ton of dust, and they fit in little hands perfectly.
Here’s how to make your own take-along Chalk-o-Rama Magnetic Vinyl Chalkboard:
What you need:
- Magnetic primer paint
- Chalkboard paint
- Foam brushes
- Chalk-o-Rama Dustless Chalk Crayons from OOLY
Step 1 –
Start with an old vinyl record. Clean and dry thoroughly.
Step 2 –
Paint the vinyl with a layer of magnetic primer paint. Allow to dry thoroughly according to paint recommendations. If needed, add another coat to improve magnetism.
Step 3 –
Once the magnetic primer has dried, add two thin layers of chalkboard paint. Allow paint to thoroughly dry.
Step 4 –
Have fun coloring with chalk crayons! Find spare magnets to use on the board for extra fun.
Use a paper towel, cloth or baby wipe to clean the chalkboard surface after use. Find fun shaped magnets to use as part of your chalkboard artwork, such as flower magnets. 🙂
Stay tuned for more vinyl themed crafts in the next few weeks!
