Watching the Charlie Brown Christmas special has always been a part of my family’s holiday traditions. Every year my mom gets pumped to watch it. Only my youngest two brothers still live at home with my parents, but she still gives me the update every year to let us know when it’s going to be playing on TV.
This year, we wanted to start the tradition of watching the classics with Cicily. To get into the spirit for the movie, I made Charlie Brown Christmas Tree Cupcakes. The “tree toppers” were made in just a few easy steps thanks to Wilton Candy Melts and decorating squeeze bottles.
Here’s how to make your own Charlie Brown Christmas Tree Cupcakes.
What you need:
- Batch of your favorite cupcakes
- White buttercream frosting
- Blue food coloring
- Chocolate chips (or Cocoa Wilton Candy Melts)
- Green Wilton Candy Melts
- Red Wilton Candy Melts
- #127 Decorating Tip (petal shaped tip)
- Decorating squeeze bottles
- Wax paper
Step 1 – Line a baking sheet with wax paper. Carefully melt the chocolate chips (or Cocoa Candy Melts) in the first decorating squeeze bottle. About 30 seconds in the microwave should be enough. Avoid overcooking the chocolate chips.
Step 2 – Take the decorating squeeze bottle and make a candy cane shape “tree.” Add a few additional branches out of the top of the trunk. Make sure the branches are of even thickness and about ¼“ wide. Too thin of branches will break when you remove from the wax paper.
Step 3 – Melt the Green Candy Melts in a decorating squeeze bottle. At the tip of the branches, add “leaves” by making ¼“ lines.
Step 4 – Melt the Red Candy Melts in a decorating squeeze bottle. At the tip of the curved branch, make a red circle ornament shape.
Step 5 – Let the tree toppers dry in a cool place for at least 30 minutes until hardened.
Step 6 – Take ¼ cup of the white frosting and place in a small bowl. Add 1 small drop of blue food coloring and mix. Add blue frosting to a decorating bag with #127 (petal) tip.
Step 7 – Place the remaining white buttercream frosting in a decorating bag with a star tip of your choice. Frost the cupcakes with the white frosting.
Step 8 – If needed, reheat the chocolate decorating squeeze bottle. Using the chocolate make an X across the top of the cupcakes.
Step 9 – In a circular motion, pipe on the blue blanket at the center of the chocolate X.
Step 10- Use a toothpick to poke a hole at the center of the cupcake. Carefully remove one of the hardened “tree toppers” from the wax paper and place into the cupcake.
Try to make a few extra tree toppers in case the branches are too thin and break.
These cupcakes do require a few extra steps, but the end result is totally worth it! They are adorable and are perfect for movie nights with the family.
