I have always wanted my own advent calendar. Now that our daughter is a little over a year old, this Christmas will be extra special. She gets excited to open presents and loves yummy delicious treats, so an advent calendar was a must on my list for this year’s Christmas decorations.
We collected some wooden wine cases from our local beer and wine store to use as decorations in our kitchen. This year, I decided to take one of the less decorative wooden cases and turn it in to an advent calendar.
Here’s how we made our first wooden advent calendar!
What you need:
- Wooden wine case or box
- 3 wooden poles
- Wood stain (optional)
- Foam brush
- Hot glue gun
- 25 small metal buckets
- Gold spray paint
- Decorative accents
- Numbered accents (1 through 25)
Step 1 – Clean the wooden box with a washcloth and water. Let dry completely. Using the foam brush, stain the wooden box and poles. When staining, you always want to brush with the natural wood grain. Let the box dry completely (at least one to two days). Be sure to remove the wine brackets/holders leaving an empty box.Step 2 – Measure and cut the poles so that they fit horizontally across the box.
Step 3 – Spray paint the small metal buckets with the gold spray paint. Let dry completely.Step 4 – Decorate the gold buckets with the Christmas decorative accents. Label each bucket with an accent for each day (1 through 25).Step 5 – Place 8 buckets (numbered 1 through 8) on the first pole. Slide the pole with the hanging buckets into the box near the top. This will be the top row of buckets. Using a hot glue gun, glue around the wooden poles securing the poles to the inside of the box.Step 6 – Repeat Step 5 on the second pole with the buckets labeled 9 through 16.
Step 7 – Place the final 9 buckets (labeled 17 through 25) on the third pole and secure to the wooden box.
Once all three poles and buckets (labeled 1 through 25) are secured within the box, your calendar is complete!
Now on to the fun part…filling the buckets with special treats! I wrapped hair clips, Star Wars socks and stickers, small Lego sets, candy and other little mini treasures for Cicily to open once a day.
